There is also a section on migrants’ status and rights. It’s simple, intuitive and dynamic to use, so everyone can find out what they want in just a few clicks.


Useful tips for anyone working with migrants

An adviser can be called upon to give advice and guidance to a client from another country.

If this is something you frequently do you will have gained lots of experience and knowledge and we would value your contribution to our Supporting Migrants section of the forum.

Other careers advisers will only occasionally interview migrant clients and this section is designed to give you the basic information to help them.

We recognise your time is limited and so we are focusing on the essential information you may need during an interview.

As with all careers interviews negotiating what the client wants from the interview and the contracting is of paramount importance.

The adviser may have to set limits to what can be discussed due to these factors:

  • The length of time available for the interview is fixed.
  • The organisation is contracted to deliver a specific service such as careers guidance, CV etc.
  • The client may have questions about their immigration status.
  • They may have a legal question.

With the contract agreed at the beginning of the interview it is easier to control the interview and stay on topic.

Possible questions to ask at the start of the interview.

“Have you the right to work in the UK?” (non-EU citizens) You can easily check their right to work or study by using the UK Government website

The migrant answers a series of questions to check their work status.

“Have you the right to study in the UK” (non-EU citizens) This government website explains the condition of study.

Other people come to the UK for work experience such as Au Pairs.

The government site gives clear guidance about their status.   If a non EU citizen stops being on work experience their status changes and you need to check their Right To Work in The UK status

The interview – what you need to know

After establishing if the client wants to work or study the guidance interview will follow the usual process of

What type of work or study do they want? Why come to the UK?

Qualifications, Experience, Employment History, etc.

Other factors to consider.

English Literacy have they the oral or written skills for the job?

For professional/high level technical jobs is their non-UK qualification acceptable?

Is the job on the UK Shortages List?

Some issues and terms you may have to overcome.

Some terms may be new to your client such as CV, cover letters and online applications.

Understand the different career options in the UK (more choices may be available than in their home country)

Find courses and activities to develop the right skills and experience (including ESOL courses)

Discover new job opportunities not available in the home country.

May not understand what an interview is. You may need to explain how your interview is different than an interview for a job.

Build confidence – they may have come from a distressing situation.
